Getting the Most Out of Your Child’s Therapy Session
A few friendly tips from our team to help sessions run smoothly and make the most of your time with us.
At our clinic, therapy sessions are designed to be purposeful, supportive and engaging for both children and their families. While our therapists do a lot behind the scenes to plan each session, there are also a few simple things families can do to help set their child up for success.
Here are some helpful tips to make the most of your therapy time.
Arriving at the Right Time
We know it’s great to get here early, but waiting isn’t fun.
To help manage congestion in our waiting room and car park, we ask that families try to arrive no more than 15 minutes before their appointment.
If you do need to arrive earlier, that’s completely okay. It can help to bring something along to keep your child comfortable while they wait, such as:
• A favourite book
• A small toy or fidget
• A snack or drink
• Headphones or a calming activity
Waiting can sometimes be tricky for children, especially in busy environments. When children become overwhelmed or dysregulated before their session begins, therapists may need to spend valuable time helping them settle. Arriving at a good time can help ensure your child starts their session feeling ready and supported.
Share Updates With Your Therapist
Your therapist loves hearing about what’s been happening between sessions. Small updates can help guide therapy and make sessions more meaningful.
You might like to share things such as:
• Changes at home or school
• New challenges or successes
• Strategies that have been working well
• Any concerns you’ve noticed
This information helps therapists tailor sessions to suit your child’s needs and strengths.
Bring Important Items
Sometimes bringing along familiar or useful items can help your therapist support your child more effectively. This might include:
• Glasses or hearing aids
• Communication devices
• School books or teacher feedback
• Favourite motivators or comfort items
If you’re unsure whether something might be helpful, feel free to ask.
Therapy Doesn’t End When the Session Does
Some of the most meaningful progress happens between sessions.
Your therapist may suggest small strategies, games or routines to try at home. These don’t need to be perfect or take a lot of time. Even short, playful moments of practice can help your child build confidence and new skills.
Think of therapy as a team effort. Families, therapists and children all work together to support progress in ways that feel safe, empowering and achievable.
Every Child’s Pace Is Different
Children develop skills in their own time and in their own way. Therapy is not about rushing progress or changing who a child is. It is about supporting their communication, independence, wellbeing and confidence in ways that honour their individual strengths and differences.
We’re here to support your child, celebrate their wins and work alongside your family every step of the way.
