Getting Ready for School: A Simple Checklist for Parents
Starting school is an exciting milestone for children and parents alike.
At Able Allied Healthcare, we understand that every child learns and grows at their own pace. Our therapists have created a simple checklist to help your child feel confident, capable, and ready for Prep.
1. Build Everyday Independence
Encourage your child to:
-
Open their lunchbox and drink bottle
-
Use the toilet and wash their hands
-
Put on shoes, socks, and their hat
Practising small daily routines builds confidence and helps children feel comfortable managing their day.
2. Encourage Listening and Focus
Play games like Simon Says or I Spy to help your child practise following instructions.
These playful moments strengthen attention and concentration — key skills for learning in the classroom.
3. Strengthen Little Hands
Simple activities like cutting with child-safe scissors, drawing, or using playdough build hand strength and coordination.
These skills make writing, dressing, and self-care tasks easier once school begins.
4. Grow Social and Communication Skills
Talking about what school will be like, practising turn-taking, and role-playing classroom scenarios all help prepare your child emotionally and socially.
If your child finds it tricky to communicate or follow directions, our Speech Therapy for Children sessions can gently support their language and confidence through play.
5. Keep Moving
Running, hopping, and climbing all support balance, strength, and body awareness.
Encourage plenty of outdoor play to help your child stay active and focused.
