What is an Allied Health Assistant?
Allied Health Assistants (AHA’s) play a crucial role in supporting allied health professionals (including Occupational Therapists and Speech Pathologists) in delivering care to clients. You’ll find AHA’s in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, aged care facilities, community health centres and private practices.
At Able Allied Healthcare, our AHA’s provide hands-on support, therapeutic interventions and implement therapy plans under the supervision of a qualified Allied Health Professional. They do this in a fun and engaging way, through structured and non-structured exercises and play. All have their Cert IV in Allied Health Assistance, as a minimum qualification.
Why engage the services of an AHA?
- The cost of sessions are considerably less than a qualified Allied Health Professional. This can be helpful for families that are paying privately or where NDIS funding is limited.
- They can see children of all ages (0-15 years), in either a clinic or community setting.
- They have access to Able Allied Healthcare’s professional multi-disciplinary team and amazing resources.
How does it work?
Initial Appointment
An initial appointment will be made with the supervising therapist (Occupational Therapist or Speech Pathologist). Please allow:
- Private Clients – 1 hour (45 minutes face-to-face and 15 minutes clinical notes)
- NDIS Clients – 1.5 hours (1 hour face-to-face and 30mins for clinical notes)
Therapy Plans
An additional 1 hour will be billed for the supervising therapist to write out a treatment/therapy plan for the AHA. This will be done immediately after the initial appointment and/or on a termly basis (every 10-12 weeks).
Regular AHA Appointments
- Depending on the approach that will suit your family’s needs, they can provide weekly, fortnightly appointments, or alternatively be engaged for a set number of sessions with your child.
- They are able to work in your child’s natural setting, including your family home, child care/school or in clinic.
Check ins with Supervising Therapist
An appointment will be scheduled with the supervising therapist, on a termly basis (every 10 – 12 weeks). The purpose of this is to discuss therapy progress, review goals, and make any required adjustments to the therapy plan, and will usually take place during the school holidays.
What are the costs?
Regular appointments are 70 minutes each and cost $101.54 (based on the AHA’s hourly rate of $86.79). An additional travel fee of $43.38 (per appointment) will apply if appointments occur in a community setting.
Supervising Therapist rate is $193.99 per hour;
- Initial appointment – $290.99
- Regular Appointment – $226.97
Invoices are issued using the Capacity Building part of your NDIS plan (the same as your Therapy funding).
Your Service Agreement will outline the breakdown of projected costs for therapy for both AHA and the supervising therapist.
Other key information
Whilst they can do a lot of things, it’s important to also be aware of what an AHA cannot do, including:
- Provide an assessment, report, diagnosis or treatment plan for a client.
- Modify a treatment plan in a way that has not been recommended by a qualified allied health professional
Should any assessments or reports be required, or any part of the treatment plan be modified, this will need to be completed by the supervising therapist and billed at their hourly rate ($193.99).
An AHA may also require specific training in the needs of the participant from the therapist before they take responsibility for the delivery of the therapy. In these cases, it is appropriate for Able Allied Healthcare to bill for the time spent by both the therapist and the therapy assistant.
